Multidisciplinary visual artist, writer and translator Farideh Lashai’s practice spanned more than five decades. Weaving together biography and personal narrative through expressive and lyrical abstraction, Lashai’s art was deeply inflected by Iran's conflicted sociopolitical landscape. While her early works on paper celebrated nature and its idyllic landscapes through depictions of solace, the works created in the aftermath of her mother’s death in 1988 embraced a more sober and ambivalent reality. Here, Lashai’s dynamic lines and strokes evoke gestures of turmoil and emotional upheaval.
