Artist and writer Omer Khairy was known for his meticulous black ink works on wood and paper. In 1963, Khairy suffered a psychological breakdown following his mother's passing, leading to a period of psychiatric treatment in Cairo. After returning to Sudan in a ‘stable’ yet fragile condition, he wrote The Scuncucur Biography (1972), detailing the life of the imaginary Englishman George Edward Scuncucur. Khairy’s subsequent artworks most often were annotated and signed by both of these identities, signifying their interconnected and cross-cultural, if contradictory, existence. His artistic legacy and archives, much of which is held by Sharjah Art Foundation, encapsulates various facets of mid-century Sudan, reflecting its architecture, its social scene and its industry, which were often rendered through portraiture and via expressions of what one assumes to be details of his inner psyche.
