Marwa Arsanios is an artist, filmmaker and researcher. She reconsiders mid-twentieth century politics from a contemporary perspective, with a particular focus on gender relations, urbanism and industrialisation. The artist's tapestry collection developed from her collaboration with Sama Association, an autonomous eco-feminist organisation in Jinwar, a women-only village in northern Syria. Created as part of her film series Who Is Afraid of Ideology? (2017–ongoing), the tapestries began with Arsanios’ designs, which were then realised by Manal Mohammad, Khansa Nouh and Maha Jermani from Sama Association.The embroidered images depict plants and animals, symbolising the organic elements that sustain Jinwar, while the abstract shapes, such as recurring circles, evoke ecological cycles, the unity of forces and the systemic exploitation of both natural resources and The embroidered images feature plants and animals, symbolising Jinwar’s land-based structures.
