While Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian drew inspiration from the architectures of the Iranian locales of Isfahan, Shiraz and Tabriz to create her exquisite, clean-cut sculptures, she also found relevance in Iran’s souqs. Echoes of these spaces can be found in the more freewheeling, expressive lines that pattern Farmanfarmaian’s carpet works such as Untitled (C3) (1993) and her mixed-media collages, defined by organic shapes that move in and out of layered, often netted surfaces.
