Born in Iran, Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian (1922-2019) lost much of her existing work before fleeing to the United States during the Islamic Revolution. Upon returning to her home country, the artist revived her earlier strategies of collaborating with craftsmen to produce her abstractions. Produced in collaboration with master weavers in Tabriz, one of Iran’s historic centers of carpet production, Untitled (C3) (1993) transforms one of the artist’s drawing-based compositions into intricate handwoven forms using naturally dyed silk and wool. Unlike the strict geometric symmetry that characterises many of the mirror mosaics for which Farmanfarmaian is most known, this composition unfolds through fluid, undulating lines and layered bands of colour. Sweeping curves, rhythmic stripes and interlocking shapes imbue the surface with a sense of dynamism. The palette–warm browns, deep blues, reds and muted golds–recalls traditional Persian carpet dyes while maintaining a distinctly modern sensibility, reimagining the carpet as both a cultural object and a site for experimentation.
