Ali Kazim engages with the layered histories of the Indian subcontinent, using them as a lens to reflect on memory and on the shifting relationship between humans and their environments. His finely rendered paintings and watercolours draw on Mughal, Rajput and Company painting traditions. Working across portraiture, landscape and figuration, Kazim creates works that are deeply rooted in the textures and histories of the subcontinent, yet their stillness and restraint imbue them with a meditative quality. This tension between specificity and introspection allows the works to feel both anchored in a particular cultural lineage and open to more universal reflections on time and memory.

Untitled (Girl with Flower) (2022) exemplifies this approach; a young woman’s profile is foregrounded against a flat pink backdrop. Her delicate features underscore Kazim’s sensitivity to tone and texture. A white flower rests behind her ear, offset by a deep blue ribbon securing her hair. The simplicity of the composition, its uncluttered, muted palette and attention to detail, offers a contemporary reimagining of the refinement of miniature painting. The portrait embodies Kazim’s rumination on presence, memory and the quiet dignity of everyday life.
