Ayreen Anastas and Rene Gabri explore the social and political systems that constitute our world and their impacts on those who live in it. What Everyone Knows (2006) is a video work comprising 16 clips, each corresponding to one day in the artists’ journey through Palestine and Israel. During this trek, Anastas and Gabri documented encounters with individuals navigating the complexities of daily life under occupation and ongoing conflict. The diverse voices featured in the work—from a geographer and an activist to a Bedouin and a former detainee—reflect on the social, psychological and political dimensions of existence in cities and regions such as Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Naqab and Hebron. The work foregrounds often-overlooked realities, inviting viewers to reconsider dominant narratives and to engage with the lived experiences of Palestinians in occupied Palestine and Israel. The piece was previously exhibited in the context of Sharjah Biennial 12 (2015), where it poignantly echoed the biennial’s titular invitation to consider ‘The past, the present, the possible’.
