Marwa Arsanios is an artist, filmmaker and researcher. Her practice reconsiders mid-twentieth-century politics in West Asia from a contemporary perspective, with a particular focus on gender relations, urbanism and industrialisation. Through her series Who is Afraid of Ideology?, she explores the possibilities of creating a countercultural movement under the oppressive forces of dictatorial political regimes using several places, from Syria to Colombia, as examples. Commissioned for Sharjah Biennial 14, the second chapter of the series—mixed media installation Who is afraid of ideology? Part 2—stems from her research into Jinwar, a women-only village in Syria, and engages with a farming cooperative close to the Syrian border in the Lebanese Bekaa Valley. The cooperative’s NGO-like structure has become a safe space for Syrian refugee women. Through the prism of these two communities, Arsanios expands her investigation into the ways the land has been reappropriated by the autonomous movement in Rojava, the Kurdish-majority region in northeastern Syria, after 2011. Through this work, which is critical of the ways top-down ideologies are built, Arsanios proposes feminist ideas for living in harmony with nature and non-human species.
