Amal Kenawy evolved an expansive practice concerned with personal history, memory and the performative power of artistic representation. Works by the late multimedia artist display the use of her own physical and psychological portraits as a conduit to explore questions of power, violence and suppression. You Will Be Killed 2 (Mid-2000s), a large-scale painting on canvas, incorporates a self-portrait of the artist, seemingly flat, potentially unconscious, suspended between life and death.
