Commissioned by Sharjah Art Foundation and Bergen Assembly, Singing Wells’ Sonic Inheritances was first presented at Sharjah Biennial 16: to carry and then at the fifth edition of Bergen Assembly (both 2025). Published in conjunction with the project, this artist book includes contributions from Singing Wells, Abubilla Arts Foundation, Tabu Osusa, Helena Carone Wheatley and Iona Gaskell.
Founded in 2011 by Nairobi’s Ketebul Music and London’s Abubilla Music, Singing Wells collects, archives and shares Indigenous East African music. With more than 370 group performances, it serves as an itinerant studio, facilitating collaborations with musicians, historians and storytellers across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Mozambique and South Africa.
