Overview

YAZ Publications is a series of 13 books featuring artist contributions, fictional and creative texts, editorial compilations and book exhibitions. Edited by Zeynep Öz, it forms part of her curatorial contribution to Sharjah Biennial 16. The development of the series and exhibitions has often intersected, with elements and themes from some publications finding their way into the exhibitions or evolving into full-scale spatial commissions.

Yaz, which means both summer and write/writing in Turkish, engages with the social and economic challenges of contemporary life, exploring how individuals can contribute to polity in an era of rapid technological advancement. The series also examines themes of home, mobility and financial instability, questioning how modern friendships are formed, expanded or discarded, as well as what kinds of social or financial contracts emerge during times of transition. Its cryptography-inspired design, with iridescent elements, alludes to the central role of labour, payment and exchange in shaping these evolving systems.
