Thenjiwe Niki Nkosi explores and tests the limits and elitism historically associated with portraiture. Her multimedia and performance practice investigates the nature and structures of power, interrogating the invisible forces behind them and imagining possible alternatives. In contrast to the tranquil aesthetic of her imagery, the artist sees painting as a potentially subversive gesture through which to address notions of identity and structures defining racial visibility and representation. In her work, the process of artmaking mirrors that of becoming, conveying the inevitable transience of the individual.
