Discover and preserve artistic treasures of filmmaking as you learn the essentials of digital film restoration.
You will engage directly with a variety of film materials, including reversal/positive, negative and positive prints in 8mm, 16mm and 35mm formats, gaining hands-on experience in identifying, analysing and digitally restoring archival footage. You will also contribute directly to the restoration of a short film, which will be presented in the final session.
Emphasising authenticity and ethical practices in restoration, this intensive four-day course will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the preservation and revival of cinematic heritage. It aims to build technical skill while deepening appreciation for the cultural value of archives.
The course is designed for film students, documentary makers, historians, journalists and anyone with an interest in archives and film heritage. Basic knowledge of video editing and colour work is required, and participants are expected to attend all sessions.
A participation certificate will be awarded upon completion of the full course and a successful evaluation.
This course has a fee of 200 AED, and all materials are provided.
About the Instructors
Chrystel Elias
Beirut-based colourist Chrystel Elias works across film, documentary and visual art. Over the past seven years, she has collaborated with filmmakers and artists to explore how colour shapes narrative and emotion. Alongside her creative practice, she specialises in archival colour restoration, contributing for the past four years to the Jocelyne Saab Association’s restoration project. Outside the colour grading suite, she experiments with analogue and digital photography, creating mixed-media works that explore memory, materiality and time.
Nadim Kamel
An archival photographer based in Beirut, Nadim Kamel dedicates his practice to the preservation and documentation of visual history. Specialising in digital workflows, he started doing film restoration with the Jocelyne Saab Association in 2021 to help revive the filmmaker’s documentary works centred around the Lebanese Civil War. He is currently building a platform for the photo archives at the Bibliothèque Orientale, Saint Joseph University of Beirut. Through this work, he wishes to ensure that regional stakeholders can further develop their institutions and practices with the interests of heritage film in mind.
