Decorative Art: Clay Relief

Ages 17+

In Arabic and English

Ever wondered how clay can be turned into decorative ceramics? Discover the expansive potential of this medium as you tackle the fundamentals of surface decoration. Merge traditional craftsmanship and contemporary artistic thinking.

After preparing a square clay slab at a defined thickness, draw decorative motifs onto its surface. Consider using repeated and geometric patterns as well as organic forms drawn from nature in your design. Carve and incise the clay to reveal detail.

You can add depth to your work through fine linear marks that articulate shifts of light and shadow. Explore the interplay between drawing and carving to create layered visual effects.

After finishing the design, refine the edges for a considered finish. Attend closely to texture, and apply gradual drying techniques to preserve the integrity of your work.

The fee is 100 AED, and all materials are provided.

Sharjah Art Foundation is committed to making its programmes inclusive and accessible. You can arrange for any support needed through the registration form.
