From Natural Pigment to Paint

With Inaam Zafar
Ages 16+

In English

Transform raw earth materials into artist pigments, and find harmony with nature. Work with naturally sourced substances such as earthenware clay, minerals and natural blacks to develop pigments rooted in place and material exploration. Through guided demonstrations, learn key processes, including grinding and levigation, to help you refine raw materials into usable colour.

Once you have created your pigments, combine them with different binders to produce a range of paints, including oil, watercolour and egg tempera. Consider how the material properties of the pigments shape the behaviour and appearance of each medium. At the end of the workshop, you will have new paints and a deeper understanding of how colour can be derived directly from the environment.
