‘Laaroussa Quartet’ - Selma and Sofiane Ouissi

Staged in the courtyard of Al Qasimiyah School, Laaroussa Quartet is a testament to craft, resilience and creativity. In 2011, choreographers Selma and Sofiane Ouissi travelled to Sejnane, a town in northern Tunisia. There they sought out the local women potters, who pass down the tradition of crafting clay dolls, or laaroussa, from mother to daughter. This experience led to Laaroussa Quartet, a Sharjah Art Foundation co-production that unfolds as a symphony of dance, music and documentary, exploring how roots and heritage shape our lives. For one hour, four dancers, a singer and a violinist elevate the gestures of doll-making into a living archive of memory and expression. Through this piece, which premiered at Festival d’Avignon, Selma and Sofiane Ouissi affirm the power of words and song to carry knowledge, tradition and identity across generations.
