How can portraiture become more than a fixed representation?
Using graphite or charcoal, draw your own features from your reflection, treating observation as a point of departure rather than a final outcome. Study proportion, symmetry and the boundaries of form before beginning the process of dismantling the sense of visual coherence.
Rework your drawing through layering, distortion, reduction and recomposition, allowing the image to move progressively away from its realistic source. Approach the self-portrait as a space for experimentation, taking inspiration from artists, whose practices challenge conventional representations of the body and identity. Consider transformation not as an act of distortion, but as a way of creating new and unexpected readings of the self.
The fee is 100 AED, and all materials are provided.
Sharjah Art Foundation is committed to making its programmes inclusive and accessible. You can arrange for any support needed through the registration form.
