Reduction engraving relies on loss as a means of construction. An image emerges from what is removed rather than what is added.
To create your reduction engraving, develop an initial design based on abstract geometric compositions while carefully planning the sequence of colour layers. From the outset, imagine the finished print, working in reverse to determine what will remain and what will be carved away at each stage of the printing. Simplify your composition into clear geometric forms, exploring areas, lines and visual rhythms that allow colour to define the structure of the image.
When your design is finished, move on to carving the linoleum block. Each cut is permanent, and any removal of material during the printing process shapes the final work. After printing the first layer, continue carving and printing successive layers in a carefully planned sequence, allowing colours to build upon one another as parts of the image gradually disappear with each stage of the process.
The fee is 200 AED, and all materials are provided.
