Register now to play Michael Parekōwhai’s Steinway grand piano

Pianists are welcome to participate in the activation of the artist’s Sharjah Biennial 16 sculpture

Take a turn on the bench of Michael Parekōwhai’s Sharjah Biennial 16 sculpture He Kōrero Pūrākau mo Te Awanui o Te Motu: story of a New Zealand river (2011). Installed in Gallery 3 of Al Mureijah Square, this fully functional Steinway grand piano features elaborate carvings that combine Māori motifs and intricate craftsmanship. Touching on themes of colonial history, cultural identity and storytelling, the sculpture is activated when it is played as a musical instrument. Selected performers will have the unique opportunity to play this extraordinary instrument and interpret Parekōwhai’s sculpture through their own music.

Since the piano is an artwork that requires care and attention, this opportunity is offered only to pianists. We warmly encourage individuals, especially those from Indigenous backgrounds, to take part in this activation.

If you would like to participate, please book your slot through our application form. The 30-minute time slots are available on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays until 15 June.
