Repetition and Rhythm: The Dynamics of Symbols

With Suzan Farah

How can printed symbols evolve from a fixed pattern into a dynamic structure shaped through deconstruction and recomposition?

Design your own symbolic motifs—whether abstract forms or imagery inspired by your personal visual vocabulary—and simplify them into printable designs. Consider the symbol as a building block for compositions structured through repetition, contrast and rhythmic distribution.

Print your motifs onto fabric using foam printing blocks, working with a carefully selected colour palette that allows the symbols to overlap and interact. Experiment with variations in colour, density and orientation to create different compositions. Then cut out the printed motifs, and stitch them together in an entirely new configuration.

Reflect with other participants on the transformation of the work, from a printed surface to a structured textile composition, in which the relationships between form, surface and material are redefined.

The fee is 200 AED, and all materials are provided.
