The Director in Focus segment at Sharjah Film Platform 9 shines a light on the filmography of Abderrahmane Sissako. In this masterclass, the acclaimed auteur shares insights about his approach to weaving intimate human stories with broader questions of politics, place and society.
Sissako spent part of his childhood in Mali before moving to Moscow, where he studied filmmaking at VGIK. He established a distinctive cinematic voice—poetic, humanist and deeply engaged—from his earliest films, including Le Jeu (1991) and Octobre (1993). Filmed at his father’s Mali home, Bamako (2006) was presented at the Cannes Film Festival while Timbuktu (2014) was selected for the official competition at Cannes and also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. More recently, he created the opera The Flight of the Boli (Le Vol du Boli) (2020), and directed Black Tea (2024).
Three of his films—Bamako, Timbuktu and Black Tea—will be screened at SFP9.
This session is free, and all materials are provided.
