SFP9: Documentary & Representation

With Mahmoud Kaabour
Ages 18+
In English

Who gets to tell a story, who gets represented, and who holds the power to shape its meaning? How does an author's relationship to a particular story shape its telling, from economic, cultural and class perspectives?

In this course, learn about representation, authorship and ethics in documentary filmmaking. Examine the implicit agreements between filmmaker and character, with a focus on the ethical dilemmas that arise when filming family members.

Through discussion, viewings and practical exercises, you will discuss consent, perspective and the power balance between subject and filmmaker. By the end of the course, you will reflect on the rights of documentary subjects and the responsibilities of the filmmaker throughout the filmmaking process.

This session is free, and all materials are provided.

Sharjah Art Foundation is committed to making its programmes inclusive and accessible. You can arrange for any support needed through the registration form.
