Surface Tension

Have you ever considered how perceptions of bodies and objects can shift when they are captured and reproduced in photographs?

Investigate this phenomenon with artist Laila Majid, who presents image-making as a process of translation, repetition and transformation. Begin the session with a guided walkthrough of Body Quotidian, an exhibition of works by Majid and Inaam Zafar. Study the ways the two artists engage with texture, fragmentation, silhouettes and material presence in their art.

After the gallery visit, move into hands-on exercises. Use phone cameras, scanning applications, handheld scanners, photocopiers and various printing methods to record and transform images gathered from books, printed matter, found materials and your immediate surroundings. Then experiment with juxtaposition and overlay, placing images side by side or allowing them to collapse into one another through repetition and distortion. As you explore processes such as photocopying, reprinting, layering and large-format commercial printing, consider how images can continuously evolve.

Building on moments of collective reflection and discussion during the session, work together to produce a series of experimental image-based works that trace the relationship between the body, technology and material transformation.

Designed for photographers, artists and creatives at all levels, this workshop is free and materials are provided.
