Research is an integral part of the art and design process, deepening engagement with cultural, historical and material contexts by weaving together fieldwork and editorial thinking.
You will discuss Amparo Baquerizas Carreras’ photobook Gauchito Querido (2026) as a case study for alternative cartography and the concept of ‘artist as gatherer’. Embarking on a 1,133-kilometre search for sites associated with the popular Argentine folk hero Gauchito Gil, she mapped 47 locations through photography and poetic prose.
Explore how artistic research can be considered creative methodology and learn to identify patterns and relationships through systems thinking. Examine practical strategies for translating research insights into concept development and meaning-making for visual storytelling.
