For its thirteenth edition, Vantage Point brings together newly commissioned works that reflect on the evolving possibilities of documentary photography. Developed through sustained curatorial dialogue with six artists across different geographies and contexts, the exhibition unfolds through a series of distinct yet interconnected approaches.
Luisa Dorr, Latifa AlBokhari and Sathish Kumar use portraiture and other observational strategies to attend to the nuances of lived experience, tracing the intimate connections between land and memory. Engaging the medium as both a method of inquiry and a form of articulation, their work is grounded in the proximity of their long-term collaboration with individuals, families and communities. The artists consider how images are shaped by the conditions of their making, thus navigating the complexities of representation.
Adam Rouhana, Guanyu Xu and Maheder Haileselassie shift the focus towards absence and rupture. Photography becomes a means of grappling with resistance to visibility as well as with histories interrupted by conflict or erasure. The image appears not a fixed document, but a space in which meaning is negotiated and, at times, withheld.
The realm of what constitutes documentary photography finds expansion through the artists’ strategic experimentations with form, material and display. Large-scale prints, constructed installations and spatial interventions challenge the medium’s conventions, thereby reimagining how images are encountered and understood. In doing so, the works envision alternative modes of narration that blur the boundaries between fact and construction, record and interpretation.
The exhibition situates documentary photography as a field in flux, one defined not by static truths, but by continual discernment.
Vantage Point 13 is curated by Sara Al Mheiri, Assistant Curator, and Osemudiamen Ekore, Curatorial Assistant, Sharjah Art Foundation.
