What Else Is in the Picture?

With Omar Darwish

Ages 17+
In English and Arabic

What remains unseen in a landscape photograph? How do physical, social and political structures of place affect the images photographers capture?

In this workshop, gain insight into the multiple layers embedded within photographs of UAE landscapes through investigation and collage.

After a short lecture, explore the elements that shape materials, infrastructure, borders, routes, labour and traces of occupation beyond what is immediately visible. Map what can be seen, what can be inferred and what remains hidden on A1 images.

Then work together to build layered collages on the photographs. Use prepared cut-outs of architectural elements, domestic objects, infrastructure, materials and archival fragments in your work.

The resulting projects will transform the landscape into an inhabited, almost domestic space, offering collective and speculative ways of reading what an image can hold beneath its surface.

Designed for photographers, artists and creatives at all levels, this session is free and materials are provided.

Sharjah Art Foundation is committed to making its programmes inclusive and accessible. You can arrange for any support you need through the registration form.
