Yara Costa Pereira is a Mozambican artist and documentary filmmaker. Working across film and installation, her practice develops through long-term, collaborative research with coastal communities, engaging indigenous ecological knowledge, oceanic cosmologies and decolonial approaches to image, sound and technology. Her projects include Nakhoda and the Mermaid, Looking for the Mermaid (ongoing) and Sea Sound (2019–2021). Costa is a Fulbright film alumna and has received support from the InMaat Foundation, Prince Claus Fund and IDFA. Her work has been presented through film festivals, exhibitions, screenings, talks and academic forums across Africa, Europe and the United States. She is a resident of the EMBracing the Ocean programme (2025–2026) and a mentor for the Prince Claus programme Cultural & Artistic Responses to the Environmental Crisis.
