Hashel Al Lamki at Sharjah Biennial 16

Emirati artist Hashel Al Lamki unpacks the relationship between humankind and their habitat, both wild and constructed. His site-specific installation Maat (2025) pays homage to the spirits who blessed the students of Al Qasimiyah School each morning. Produced through research and collaborations developed during residencies with La Residencia, Mallorca; Srishti Charitable Trust, Kerala; and ARD Art Institution, Cairo, it is inspired by concepts in the Egyptian Book of the Dead. The installation centers on themes of guidance through confession and self-examination. By integrating diverse cultural and geographic practices, the artist constructs an immersive, multi-panel installation that symbolically ‘throws’ each culture’s wisdom onto a shared space. Another work, the nine-metre polyptych Part-Time Lovers (2025), explores the natural cycles of seasons in an imagined landscape while also addressing pressing environmental concerns. The artist draws a parallel between natural forces and the delicate balance they maintain. In this Artist In Focus, watch to see how in his composition, clouds draw closer to mountains, and, at certain points, sky and earth seem indistinguishable—a poetic expression of their interconnectedness.
