Serapis Maritime at Sharjah Biennial 16

Serapis Maritime is a hybrid art, design and fashion entity based in Greece, producing work inspired by marine industries. It is led by Krini Dimopoulou, Dimitra Dimopoulou, and Manolis D. Lemos. Through a constant upcycling of materials and ideas, an expanded seascape is distributed and communicated through multiple channels. MOTHER TRADE (2025) comprises a collection of garments and objects, alongside a series of public gestures facing the sea. Created through collaborations with local producers, craftspeople and the Sharjah Maritime Academy, the work is a tribute to regional maritime history and uses materials from Sharjah’s shipyards and industrial facilities. MOTHER TRADE creates an immersive environment blurring experiences of showroom, exhibition and a public seating area. Watch this Artist In Focus to see how public structures made from blocks of used clothing collected from local garment redistribution facilities serve as sculptures for observation and contemplation, offering different viewpoints of the water and the port. The lightwork is conceived as a collaborative sculpture, a poetic phrase addressed to the port and its people, made from wooden boat scraps, metal and light.
