Merve Elveren at Sharjah Biennial 16

Day to Day, curated by Instanbul-based Merve Elveren and Zeynep Öz, follows a book-to-exhibition format, contrary to the exhibition-to-publication sequence usually seen in the art world. Composed of works by Ayşe İdil İdil, Betül Aksu and Okyanus Çağrı Çamcı, the installation project grew out of the social and political shakeups experienced by both the artists and the curators. This book and its ‘open-ended’ process considered questions such as: How do we go on with our day-to-day lives? How do we answer questions about being constantly on the move and on belonging/not belonging to a place? Watch this Artist In Focus to learn how the common thread between the works on display here is mobility and immobility—physical, temporal or most importantly psychological—driven by a plethora of circumstantial, context-specific and geopolitical obstacles surrounding the artists. Day to Day is part of YAZ Publications—a series of 13 books consisting of artist contributions, fictional and creative texts, editorial compilations as well as book exhibitions. This project is supported by SAHA.
