Step into the captivating textile world of Womanifesto, a feminist artist exchange exhibited at the 16th Sharjah Biennial. Their exhibition programme, active in Thailand from 1997 to 2008, provided a vital platform for multigenerational artists across Asia and beyond to collaborate and create collectively. Challenging male-dominated art histories, Womanifesto highlighted women’s lived experiences through exhibitions, workshops, publications, a website, and even a rural farm residency. In this Artist in Focus, we explore the project ‘WeMend’ (2023–ongoing), commissioned by #SharjahArtFoundation. Three of Womanifesto’s core organisers—Jamilah Preenun Nana, Nitaya Ueareeworkaul and Varsha Nair—join other members in engaging with different communities of women to stitch fabric scraps into a quilted, shelter-like structure. Now reproduced in India, Switzerland, Thailand and the UAE as well as other communities across the world, this shelter offers a space for women of diverse backgrounds to exchange knowledge and build platforms for solidarity.
